How F*cked Up Is Your Management? An uncomfortable conversation about modern leadership Johnathan Nightingale Melissa Nightingale 9780995964303 Books Reviews

  • There are some real nuggets here, and in digestable form. Some of it comes from previous blog posts so may be a rehash, but much is new. Perhaps I'm part of the problem, but the latter half of the book devolves a bit into every story having an element of self-loathing white person. Some of the stories are relevant for this and need to be told, but it gets a bit beat you over the head hamfisted.

Still, glad I read it to try to be more aware of my biases.
  • Already read a ton of management books? Not like this one. Real life/mgt experiences screaming "It's about them, not about you!" And by changing your focus to "them" (your family/friends/colleagues), you become way better than the younger version of you who focuses too much on "me". I guarantee you will learn something here and that's the point right?
  • Melissa and Jonathan have written the first "business" book that has stuck with me, that got at the raw feeling of what it means to lead and manage others. Inside you'll find candid dispatches from two seasoned leaders who've seen a lot, but that filter all of it through their experience as humans. HFUIYM is a refreshing manual on how to lead today, and a reminder that we all have work to do.
  • It’s a quick read, and the prose is light. The lessons are dense, though, and I doubt there are many managers or companies who can’t learn something here. I certainly haven’t worked with any.

For me I️t was equal parts pat on the back, stinging critique, and sign post hints for ways to handle challenges I haven’t hit yet.

If you’re a manager (or want to be), buy this book and read I️t.
  • Nothing really new or inspiring. Great title, may as well have read their blogs.
  • Based on the experience and expertise shared on their blog 'The Co-Pour', I am very excited to have Melissa & Johnathan's advice in this book dedicated to leadership and management. Can't wait to dive in!
  • It’s a HR book not a management book
  • Don’t be confused by the title. This is not a book about other people’s management, it’s about you. There are a lot of hard truths in this book, whether you choose to face them or ignore them. Even if you are not a manager yourself (as I am not), it offers a lot of insight into the struggles and mistakes we all make in whatever leadership roles we take on. Bonus it’s an easy and entertaining read, even when it hits too close to home.
