Silence of the Songbirds Bridget Stutchbury John Flicker 9780802716910 Books Reviews

  • I've read this book previously and wanted a friend to read it as well. The book itself was in great condition for being used.
  • Very interesting, but doesn't cover too much new territory on song bird migration habitats. Seems to go on a little too long for my taste and repeated the message a bit too much. Overall, very informative and written in an easy to read style.
  • This is a very well-written book and it will make you think about the consequences of our actions on the natural world. I recommend this to all bird-watchers and environmentalists.
  • This is a very interesting, revealing and important book. It is written in heartfelt and easy to understand language. It is a must-read book for anyone interested in nature and our environment.
  • This is an incredibly insightful reveal on how our lifestyle is creating havoc for our songbirds. Should be required reading in all schools and for anyone concerned with our environment.
  • Very interesting and also disturbing. A must read for bird lovers. Makes us stop and think about products we use.
  • Purchased this for my wife, who is an Audubon Board member and leads a young birders group. She loved reading this !
  • Lots of good info, timely topic, good organization. I think people would be farther ahead in trying to understand this problem, and what may be done about it, that trying to embrace the falsehood about people being primarialy responsible for causing global warming.

Stealing the Preacher Karen Witemeyer 9780764209666 Books Reviews

  • Set in Texas in 1885, this amusing story tells of one father going out of his way to fulfill his daughter's birthday wish. Joanna Robbins has been longing for a preacher to come to their community to share about the love of God. When she confides this desire to her ex-outlaw father, she could never have imagined the steps he was about to take.

Crockett Archer is traveling to interview for the minister's position in a south Texas town when his train is held up. He is shocked when he learns the gun-waving thugs are not looking for money or jewels - they want the preacher! Tied up and forced to go with them, Crockett soon comes face-to-face with the person indirectly responsible for his kidnapping the red-headed and fully abashed Joanna. As she insists her father release him, Crockett can't help but be inspired by her faith and determination, and he begins to wonder if maybe this crazy beginning isn't the open door for which he's been waiting.

When Crockett tells Joanna he'd like to stay on as minister, she can't believe it. Her prayers have been answered at last! Even though her father Silas has turned away from his youthful thieving ways - except where a certain preacher is concerned - she knows he has never really believed in God. It's her dearest wish to see Silas come to trust Christ as Savior.

Joanna and Crockett work together to establish their little country church, but events seem to be conspiring to stop them from their goals. One young lady is out to secure Crockett as her husband as soon as possible, and a nosy marshal may sniff out Silas's secrets before his heart can be changed. There's a lot to enjoy in this faith-filled western adventure!
  • This was the second book in the Archer Brothers series. You know, I read a few reviews that said the first book was soo much better, but if I'm honest, I found this just as pleasant a read as the first! Don't get me wrong, I truly and completely missed having the entire Archer gang around and it did kind of leave me homesick for the boys, but Crockett's story was just as riveting! I found myself endeared by the new characters and my heart definitely flopped once or twice...or thrice or...well, you get the point. The story was enticing, the characters marvelous as before, and the setting was just right. I'm not a huge romance bug, I'm really not. Not when it comes to books anyway, but I swear Karen Witemeyer has pulled me into her world head over heals! Just the perfect amount of skipped heart beats, both for danger and for love. And, every now and again, a girl needs a chick flick to spur her dreams at night. I would highly recommend this sequel just as I would the first book!
  • As a disclaimer, I haven't read the first book in the Archer boys' story, but I can only imagine it would enhance this book further.

I love everything about this book, the story is well paced and sweet, the side characters are great, Joanna is so easy to identify with, and Crockett is a national treasure. The spiritual aspects of this book are heavier than some of the author's previous in my opinion (I've read Tailor-Made and To Win Her Heart), but considering Crockett is a preacher, it makes sense, feels natural, and doesn't come across as shoehorned in which I loved. She picked great pieces of scripture to use. On a side-note, Silas perfectly embodies every over-protective, ornery father ever too. I adored everything about this book, I've already read through it a few times!
  • Crockett Archer has left his ranch to obtain the pastor’s position at a church in Piney Woods, Texas. He and one other man are the finalists for the position, and Crockett is sure this is what God wants for him. When the train is held up by some older bandits, and all they want is the preacher, he doesn’t know what to think. Things get even more bizarre when the leader takes Crocket to his ranch and presents him to his daughter as her birthday present.

Joanna Robbins loves her father. They’re both still reeling from her mother’s passing, but her mother had left Jo with the unfinished task to bring her father to the Lord. She’s tried her best to no avail, and her innocent wish for a preacher at their abandoned church was to help fulfill her mother’s dying wish. She never expected her father to take her so seriously or to go steal one. When she shows Crockett the church, he’s kind and sympathetic, but he’s sure he’s suppose to go to Piney Woods. God just might have other plans for him, however.

I loved this book! Looking at the cover and reading the synopsis, I wondered if perhaps it wasn’t going to be too light-hearted or silly. It wasn’t. Although it had moments of humor, it is a solid story with well-fleshed out characters and a well-developed plot with plenty of problems to work through. I enjoyed ever minute of it. It was a delightful, clean, Christian romance, and I noted no errors or mistakes. How refreshing!

"I first read 1984 for a high school English class almost 20 years ago, I was immediately drawn to Orwell's writing style. For every bit of dialog, there is MUCH more narration, but the narration is engrossing and intriguing. I love when Orwell uses long sentences with parallel phrasing, and he describes in detail a society that is frighteningly much like our own-- a crushingly intrusive government that uses constant and inescapable surveillance paired with a steady stream of falsehoods marketed as truth that caters to the 1% (the Inner Party) while the lower castes (the Outer Party and the Proles) suffer in poverty and neglect. If you're like me and love a good bleak novel that explores the basic depravity of man (other favorites of mine are Brave New World and Lord of the Flies), read 1984. Don't forget to give Animal Farm a try as well; it covers very similar themes using talking barnyard animals, but it's an easier read. Better read this book quickly because Big Brother Is Watching You."

1984 German Edition George Orwell 9783548234106 Books Reviews

  • This is one of the first books I have read more than once. I first read "1984" in 1985 and now for the second time in 2018. The book has remained the same, but both the world and I have not. I cannot begin to convey how genuinely frightening this book is. I am a lover of popular science fiction and am astounded by Orwell's ability to be more compelling, entertaining and engrossing than authors with the benefit of light sabers, phasers and teleportation.

To every young person who has been assigned this book, know that you are reading a literary work of art. Many of you will understand and appreciate it, but if you love literature, please make a mental note to read this again when you are older. Youth brings with it eternal hope, boundless optimism and of course, hormones, so you will find yourself rebelling against the pessimism of the book itself - you will effectively be Winston raging against the machine, hoping, searching, questing for a way out. In short, you will cheat.

But when you get older, have a family, lose loved ones and see some of your dreams unfulfilled - when you witness entire nations and races of peoples born, live and die in brutal squalor - when you reflect on the technological advances made over the decades and gaze, with mouth agape, at how a people can be less advanced, less informed and less enlightened, not despite these innovations, but BECAUSE of them, then you will read 1984 as it was meant to be read...not as a dark, dystopian world you enter when you open the book, but a beautifully brutal warning that, even as you read it, is prophetically coming true around you.
  • I read this in high school (I'm 72 now) and at that time it was a prediction of things to come. In some ways it's pretty close. It is interesting that people are reading it more now because of the current situation. I think that if they are alarmed by this book they should try "It Can't Happen Here."

Another worthwhile book is "A Nation of Sheep" by William J. Lederer
  • 1984 is a thrilling classic novel by George Orwell that brings readers into a dystopian society where citizens know “Big brother is watching you.” (Orwell 2) The book follows Winston Smith as he secretly denounces the all-powerful government, Big Brother, and decides to live a daring life of scandals and secrets. As expected, Big Brother catches Winston, and tortures him ruthlessly until he is a shell of his former self. Although the storyline itself is exhilarating enough to make readers want to turn the next page, it’s really the larger message that makes this read so worthwhile extreme political philosophies, like Big Brothers’ totalitarianism, are no good. I will admit at times I felt I didn’t even like Winston, like when he first saw Julia, his lover, and told her “I hated the sight of you...I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterwards.” which shows misogyny in the most unsettling way, and when he kept dismally repeating that “there was no escape” from death because of his love affair (Orwell 120, 152). Regardless of whether or not the characters are relatable, the book definitely serves as a cautionary tail to all those who have scanned it pages. This book has many horrifying elements and scenes, such as telescreens, the things constantly watching people even in their own homes. Newspeak, Big Brother’s official language, is also very unsettling, as the government controls what people say and think without them realizing it, because the words to think bad thoughts do not even exist. However, limited language and stalking screens are nothing compared to the awful dehumanization that Big Brother inflicts on those who don’t agree with them. When brought to room 101 in the Ministry of Love (how ironic of a name), Smith was subjected to “the worst thing in the world,” as O'Brien recalled, almost killing Winston using his worst fear (Orwell 283). This turned Winston into what seemed like an animal with rabies, and after this punishment (in which he was spared death because he betrayed his lover Julia) he was never the same.

Perhaps, though, the scariest thing about this novel was that I didn’t find it all that scary. Many things Orwell brilliantly predicted are a reality now, like cameras in the pockets of nearly every person in a developed country that could potentially “see” and “hear” everything. Phones like the iPhone not only have fingerprints (for touch identification) but now are starting to delve into the world of facial recognition, and no one truly knows for sure where this information goes. We see far worse things than Winston saw in the Ministry of Love by simply turning on the news. Nations like North Korea have complete control over their citizens, and the saddest part is, these citizens are too shielded from reality to even know that there is something wrong with the way they are treated. People also have the tendency to blindly trust whatever the media says, which could just be another way us people are manipulated every day. It makes me wonder, is 2+2 really 4… or, because numbers are a concept created by man, could it really equal 5?

  • In the 1960's I first read this book. It has been a guiding reminder through these years of how fragile freedom and democracy can be and of how important it is to be vigilant and aware of trends that may destroy them! (2017)

  • Only book I could find that included adoptive parent's feelings.....but it was disappointing in what was said - Not much info for those women, not much comfort, but did share some of their feelings.....just feel this element is totally left out of the triad...... VERY SAD that more research isn't put in for these women and men to gain help and others to understand their feelings.....very disappointing in that regard.
  • A comprehensive guide, albeit a bit dated it did provide many different perspectives that one must be sensitive to before making/taking the leap toward looking for your birth parents. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about sensitizing themselves for their search. It has comprehensive tips on where to start and how to compile your information as you search. Not everyone I have met has been successful even with all the modern (DNA testing) available today. This book focuses on the other tools in your arsenal; good old fashion detective work.
  • This book was a great benefit to me and a must read for everyone in the adoption community. Thank you!
  • I found this book incredibly helpful in helping me deal with searching for and eventually reuniting with my birthmother. I bought it a year and a half ago, and I've referred back to it so many times that it looks like I've had it much longer. It gives very helpful advice for everyone involved in adoption and allows you to see all sides of the issue. Also, the testimonials and Jean Strauss's search and reunion story give the book a very personal feel. Overall, a great book for anyone connected to adoption.
  • very helpful to understand how adopted children feel and what the birth mother experiences at a reunion
  • Great information and good practical advice for all working toward a reunion. As a husband--after the fact--to a birth mother, I learned a lot. I would definitely recommeend it.
  • I bought this to give as a reunion gift to a very good friend. It was highly recommended by several friends.. this is a must read.
and a book every adoption support group should own, and recommend
  • Great book

SelfDirected Behavior SelfModification for Personal Adjustment David L Watson Roland G Tharp Books Reviews

  • I purchased this as a required textbook, and it has become one of my most treasured books. The content is overwhelmingly practical and well-researched, with strong arguments against conventional wisdom nuggets like "white knuckling" your way through something. I enjoyed the book for the freedom it gives. First, the authors continually cited research about what makes the human mind change its habits and hangups, and what often causes it to fall two steps back. Second, they outline practical steps for how *you* should apply successful principles in your own life, in a patient voice that seems like one lightbulb revelation after another, all while talking to a wise friend. I'm looking forward to using it as a fundamental resource as I change myself for the better, one step at a time.
  • This book is amazing, it is organized so you can understand the whole self modification process from the very beginning. It is a bit technical but you can do some research about certain topics to complement the chapters. It has a lot of information and examples, but still it is pretty "easy" to understand.

I would recommend you to pair this book with Aubrey Daniels 'Other People's Habits' which is much more approchable and easy to get, but not as detailed an technical.
  • We all know what are the good habits and bad habits. But we don't know how to start a good one. This book teaches you in a scientific way, with huge amount of scientific references how to solve this problem. Don't judge the book with its price. For me this book is invaluable.

Ok, this is a textbook for students, but the information and practical applications are for everyone in this planet.

Do you really want to change something in your life for better? Just click to buy, have the book, start studying and do what is written there...You will be surprised how you are good at having new good habits...
  • This book teaches each individual about self-behavior and to improve the good ones. It provides guides and step by step instructions to successful behavior.
  • I had to purchase this book for one of my classes and it ended up being really interesting and helpful. It is a good read but it is really useful if you actually apply it! Highly recommend this book.
  • Very helpful. I am now looking at my habits in a new light and have actually helped to change a few.
  • I will be reading this over and over. The only self help book you will ever need.
  • Very thorough outline for changing one's behavior. This was a required textbook, but I learned a lot from it.

Hell Weeping A retelling of Dante Inferno Infernal Descent Skye MacKinnon Bea Paige 9781791681067 Books Reviews

  • I’ve never read Dante’s Inferno, so I can’t speak to the similarities since the title of the book says it’s a retelling. What I can say about this book is that it is a great sequel to Hell’s Calling! The journey through the circles of Hell continue in this book. We learn a little more about the characters, and things heat up (and it’s not because they are in Hell if you know what I mean 😉). This is a RH series so if that’s not “your cup of tea” then I suggest bypassing these books. Overall great storyline and I can’t wait until book 3 comes out!
  • This series just keeps getting better! The deeper Ciera and her guys travel into the circles, the more interesting, and dangerous it gets. And after that epilogue, I really hope we get Tris' story too! I need more and I'll be impatiently waiting for book 3!!
  • Ciera is traveling ever deeper into hell to rescue her sister. Her three companions have become even closer to her and together they’re willing to face anything. This story is spell-binding and kept me hooked from the very first page.
  • This book is starting to heat up. They continue moving through the circles gaining companions along the way. I'm growing so attached to the personalities and the people. I can't wait to continue the story.
  • I love this series so much. The story is so unique and the characters have captured my heart. I highly recommend❣️
  • Bea and Skye did a fabulous job with this sequel to their Dante's Inferno reimagined story, Hell's Calling! Bea and Skye did amazing world building in Book 1 and they really focused on building the relationships between Ciera and her 3 delicious men, which I wholeheartedly enjoyed. In this part of the series, we get to see Ciera kick more butt with her archery skills, see her walls come down (along with some of the guys), introduced to new side characters that are sometimes fun and sometimes sooooo bad hahaha.

I was blown away from the prologue alone, it kinda hits you in the gut when you realize what's going on, but it makes for a more intense and amazing story. I didn't see all the twists coming in this story which was a nice change of pace to some stories recently that you could see what was going to happen way in advance. I will say I was head over heels for Ceb in Book 1 and liked Maro too. I could care less about Plutus in Book 1, buuuuuut Bea and Skye really changed my mind. I liked seeing the different sides to the guys and the cave scene..... *fans self*. Also liked the tension that was created with everyone the farther into hell they went (esp. the light situation with Maro and how that was resolved).

I can't wait to meet Lucifer and see how Ciera handles him. I think Bea and Skye nailed the darker parts of this story, taking some notes from Dante himself. The trees man, those things hit me in the feels (not the best thing while reading it on a plane with my coworker right next to me haha). I will say there were some British phrases I was completely clueless about and had to ask Google/ask some Brits to help me out haha. All in all, create follow up to Book 1 and here's to hoping Book 3 is in our near future ❤️
  • This book seemed to have been a long time coming and it was definitely worth the wait. I loved the continuation of Ciera's journey through Hell with her men (who are absolutely hotter than Hell) to save her little sister. Bea and Skye have done a fantastic job in co-authoring this book. I couldn't see the join!
After an intriguing prologue which gives us insight that Ciera does not have, this book starts where Hell's Calling finished, dropping us right into the action.
Ciera is strong, brave, and loving. She adores her little sister and is growing to adore her three companions as well. Her feelings for each of her three men are becoming more obvious, to them and to us, and their feelings for her are no mystery. The three men are distinct characters and I love them all. Who wouldn't? They are following her through Hell of their own accord, not quite sure why they started this journey but well aware of why they are continuing it. They are her companions and protectors and want to be so much more. So far, it has been a slow burn but the temperature rises now and Ciera finds out just how much they want her. The escalation of their relationship felt organic and just right for the pace of the book, the troubles they have faced, and the situation they found themselves in.
Ciera's resolve to reach the centre of Hell and rescue her sister from Lucifer is stronger than ever, but each Circle presents its own challenge. One of the Circles in particular throws a real curve ball at Ciera, which I did not see coming, and leaves us teetering on that awful cliff edge as the book finishes. The epilogue promises much for the next book which I anticipate will be even better than this one.

From our earliest years we have heard proverbs, and many of them are repeated without much thought. Yes, 'birds of a feather flock together' and 'absence makes the heart grow fonder', but these sayings are so familiar that we are scarcely aware they are proverbs. It has been so for thousands of years, in every culture. It is only when someone like Max Cryer takes the time to look at them that we can see how these 'pearls of wisdom' have played such a key role in the moral guidance of every society. Sometimes the wisdom is distinctly odd, sometimes it has become outdated, and sometimes it is simply contradictory. After all, do 'many hands make light work' or do 'too many cooks spoil the broth'? You can't really have it both ways. Max Cryer has chosen some of the most interesting and perplexing, and with his characteristic wry wit he analyses their meaning and truth. "A quirky, fascinating delve into the human psyche over millennia that has resulted in ... gems." -Northern Advocate

The Drawing Lesson A Graphic Novel That Teaches You How to Draw Mark Crilley 9780385346337 Books Reviews

  • I've never heard of Mark Crilley before, never read any of his books, and I have a feeling I'm not his usual target demographic (since he's well-known for his manga books and I'm not a manga fan), but wow, this was a wonderful book.

Its purpose, according to the book's notes, is to allow you to experience what it's like to have a mentor--someone who will not only teach you how to draw, but interact with you, point out what you're doing wrong, and to encourage you (but not coddle you). This book delivers that, in an abbreviated form.

The story is of a boy, David, who meets a woman in the park who is drawing. He begs her to teach him, and she does, for a few hours. But of course, the lesson doesn't end there! Each chapter shows how David and his mentor meet up, and each chapter shows her teaching him a new drawing principle. First, it's getting the outline of the drawing accurate. There's a chapter on shading. Then there's the one about using your pencil strokes to follow along the form. (I enjoyed that one. Finally, a beginner drawing book that doesn't rely on smearing the graphite! Eureka! Glory be!) Negative space is covered, composition--it's a really good book!

I'd recommend it to anyone, of any age. I wouldn't assume that it would be the only drawing book that would ever be needed. It can't possibly cover everything. But it does offer a good start, plus it teaches some truths that beginner artists need to learn, but are things that are often beyond the scope of regular beginner drawing books. Things like wanting to draw for its own sake (not to compete with someone else), and to accept criticism and keep on moving forward.

This is a wonderful book and beautifully presented. I think it would be a big hit with anyone, but particularly those under age 18, especially if they've just discovered drawing.
  • Well, I pre-ordered this book and it arrived yesterday. I think if Mr Crilley met me he would be VERY surprised to find an older beginner artist bought this book! This book is amazing, and it's a whole teaching manual, with a story line that's interesting ! I highly recommend this book to new and intermediate artists..... You will love it! Thanks Mark Crilley !
  • TLDR; highly recommend for kids or any beginner who is interested in drawing better. Entertaining story and art, and excellent instruction.

This is the book that I wish I had had when I was 6 (or 10, or 13).

I got this for my niece and nephew, the former of whom likes to draw, and the latter hopefully will develop the habit as he grows a little older. Being that I live thousands of miles from them, I cannot easily teach them what I've learned about drawing, sit with them and practice, or encourage them to keep at it; so I decided this would be a fair substitute. That said, what kind of uncle would I be if I didn't look though it first, to ensure that the quality and lessons were worth it.

    Well, worth it they are!

This little book surprised me in several ways. First of all, the story and pictures are delightful, and could be enjoyed without the lessons. Actually the lessons almost feel secondary, they weave so well with the narrative that you'd almost forget that there was a lesson there at all, except that at the end of each chapter there is a prompt on what to practice. I was worried that the "story" would be just a cheap gimmick, and that it would otherwise be just a another "how-to-draw" book, but the story really stands up on it's own. A synopsis can be ready elsewhere, so I won't get into what the story is about.

Second the lessons are good. Really really good, not pedantic, formulaic or "kids stuff", but lessons on real fundamentals, and things that aspiring artist will not necessarily pick up just from practicing. One of the big ones is that it encourages the types of practice which really will cause kids to improve, and yet remain versatile enough to tackle whichever style they chose to emulate, or to develop their own.

The third thing which really impressed me is that it's very much NOT a how-to-draw X book and not the least bit stifling. It's doesn't demonstrate how to draw a specific thing, step-by-step, but teaches basic techniques for seeing and interpreting, for composition, shading, proportion, etc. such that kids will learn how to draw whatever they see, and whatever they want to draw, not just what a step-by-step how-to book taught them to draw.

Now, many kids really do enjoy those how-to methods, and I'm not necessarily saying they should be avoided, but this is much more useful an approach than those are and of a more lasting benefit. Get this and how-to books, fine, but don't skip on getting this.

The fourth thing, and perhaps a bit personal to me, is that I never had a chance to get any good art instruction when I was young, and this is the book that I now wish that I had had then. Any beginner with this book has a huge head start (I really can't overstate that), particularly if they aren't going to be getting any professional instruction. This book is one part excellent lessons, one part interesting art and story and one part mentor. There are many great books on drawing, or art in general, but this one could have been the only one that I needed from about the 3rd grade through at least my early teenage years.

And here is a bonus fifth surprise, which only came to me well after finishing the book and thinking about it in retrospect The simply-drawn panels are actually something that could get young kinds inspired to do their own comics... or just share their drawings and stories in general; Some kids may not necessarily need all that much inspiration to do so, but they could easily tell their own stories in pictures and words, hold them up against Mr. Crilley's and be satisfied that they drew well enough to communicate their story to their readers. I dealt with a ton of self-doubt when I was young, about whether or not my art was good enough to show to others. I wrote and drew and then stuffed the work away and mostly hid it from others. Seeing a real book, with simple and expressive art in it, which did tell a story, which people read and liked and paid money for would have encouraged me thoroughly and would have put those doubts to rest forever. That's of incalculable worth to an aspiring artist.
  • Believe it or not, I could've been the first person to review this! But I wouldn't have gotten it in the mail and it would've been dishonest, so now that I've finished reading it, (a few minutes ago actually,) I'll share with the internet my thoughts on this masterpiece.

The sketchy art style is superb. With it's cartoony characters and semi-realistic backgrounds, it's almost as if he's returned to his Akiko roots, while at the same time he makes it seem as if the world around the characters is a sketch itself. The thinly laced plot is solid as a rock and the characters are very believable. From the eager student David, (named after his real life art instructor, David Small,) to his art instructor Becky, who seems to teach him about drawing just to get him to stop bugging her.

As a young student artist, it calls to mind MY drawing lessons I've had with my first art instructor a few years ago, (and him telling me to make my lines darker among other things.) I've had many of the same problems with my art as David does in this book, (and still do,) so that makes the young protagonist far more compelling to me than, say, Miki Yoshida from Miki Falls. Becky's drawing lessons are very practical and very similar to how my art instructor taught me, (though I don't remember him telling me about Negative Space,) and her instructions don't feel like she's talking down to you, unlike SOME instructional comics I've read.

Ever since I picked up that copy of Mastering Manga over a Christopher Hart book so long ago, I feel like I've learned everything about drawing comics from this master of the comics medium, (and from my art instructor of course!) All in all, if this masterpiece doesn't win him his Eisner Award, (or at least fourteenth nomination,) I don't know what will!

"It's interesting how few spiritual people have read this book. It's truly moving and you'll find yourself repeating much of what Pascal wrote so long ago. It's a book from a man that thought long and hard about faith. While some of his sayings are popular and well known, many of the best I believe are still just waiting in the book to be found."

Pensées Pascal 9782253004301 Books Reviews

  • I have taken it upon myself to familiarize myself with many of the classical arguments for and against God. Blaise Pascal was a 17th century mathematician and philosopher who decided to follow Christ with his whole heart. He did so not without careful consideration of the alternatives, and his logic in Pensées is reflected in what is commonly known as Pascal's wager. He reasons that either the God of the Bible is true, or there is no God. If the God of the Bible is true and trusting him with your life results in eternal life and heaven without evil forever, the benefits are obvious. If God is true, and you reject him, the results are eternal separation and hell. If God is false, believing in Him results in the temporal benefits of a life filled with purpose only to result in oblivion. If God is false, not believing in Him simply results in a meaningless life only to end in oblivion. Pascal points out that everyone must wager one of these choices, and for him wagering that God is real and living your life that way is infinitely better. Pensées is translated as "thoughts" and it was published after Pascal died. He intended to make them his life work, but never finished the project. It is laid out much like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes as short bullet points, and that was what his notes were like. The book was published in 1669. His thoughts are absolutely powerful, and formed foundations for future philosophical discussions.
  • Science, Religion, Psychology, Proof, Certainity, Reason, Self-love, God, Bible, Mathematics, History, etc., etc.. These ideas confront the modern mind.

Pascal, a mathematical genius and devout Christian, confronts them face-to-face. The conversation is fascinating!

Enjoyed the intro by TS Elliott. Explains that Pascal grew up working to understand the way things work, like Maxwell. Comments on the battle Pascal is fighting in his writing with Montaigne. Montaigne is the doubter in Everyman, even Pascal. The mathematical genius unites with the passionate believer to create a work 'that belongs to the history of humanity'.

As he notes, 'it must be remembered that he counts as one of the greatest physicists and mathematicians of all time'.

Pascal's writing sounds current to the modern ear, since the scientific world that was planted then is now in full bloom. He is writing to his contemporaries, especially the devotees of scientific rationalism. It helps to place him in his context. Descartes and Galileo are alive, Newton is born when Pascal is 20.

The amazing power of mathematical science is sweeping the intellectual world. Pascal is a mathematical genius from childhood. He grows up in this fascinating new world and is a player. Young, smart, friends with the leading lights of France, theatre, parties, rich, finding his place with the prominent mathematicians of Europe, life is good.

His sister becomes a nun. More, she converts to Jansenism, a Calvinistic form of Catholicism. Strict, moral, serious, disciplined and studious. She attempts to convert him. He listens and is moved, but not very far. He becomes sick. A doctor spends time treating him. He is a Jansenist. More listening. One day he experiences a mental firestorm. He dedicates himself without reservation to the Christian God.

His memory and breadth of reading is prodigious. He was believed to have memorized the Bible. He quotes from most of the books of the Bible in these notes. Also, ancient authors such as Livy, Cicero, Augustine, Horace, Josephus, Philo, Eusebius, Thomas Aquinas, etc. His goal is the persuade the reader of the divine inspiration of the Bible and that the Christian faith is the truth from God

He presents Daniel's prophesy concerning the seventy weeks of years and the appearance of the messiah and the destruction of the temple as a proof of Jesus as the messiah and confirmation of Bible truth. He explains Daniel's prophesies on the march of the world powers and the fulfillment in history.

This is just one of dozens that he uses to convince the reader.

He also expresses how this knowledge affects him . . .

"Jesus Christ for told as to the time and the state of the world. The ruler taken from the thigh and the forth monarchy. How lucky we are to see this light amidst this darkness! How fine it is to see, with the eyes of faith, Darius and Cyrus, Alexander, Cyrus and Romans."

These refer to the historical fulfillment of Daniel's prophecies. Pascal's analysis Daniel's prophesy of the kings of the north and south is amazing. The historical research must gave taken months.

Pascal comments that the prophecies are the strongest proof of Jesus Christ. Over a thousand years and spread by the Jews all around the world in advance. Clearly the work of God!

He notes "proofs of Jesus Christ. - Jesus Christ said a great things so simply, that it seems as though he had not thought them great; and yet so clearly that we easily see what he thought of them. This clearness, joined to this simplicity, is wonderful."

    A comment of deep meditation.

Pascal's understanding of the role of "proof" in belief is fascinating. Especially since as a mathematician he uses 'proof' as a fundamental tool in scientific discoveries. -

"There are three sources of belief reason, custom, inspiration. The Christian religion, which alone has reason, does not acknowledge as her true children those who believe without inspiration. It is not that she excludes reason and custom. On the contrary, the mind must be open to proofs, must be confirmed by custom, and offer itself in humbleness to inspirations, which alone can produce a true and saving effect." -

Proof is a part of Christian belief but not all. Human belief is deeper than intellectual analysis.

Pascal analyzes the interplay of external and internal devotion. . .

"It is superstition to put one's hope in formalities; but it is pride to be unwilling to submit to them." Superstition meant foolishness or unfounded belief.

"The external must be joined to the internal to obtain anything from God, that is to say we must kneel, pray with the lips, etc., in order that proud man, who would not submit himself to God, may be now subject to the creature. To expect help from these externals his superstition; to refuse to join them to the internal is pride."

Decarte seen as father of modern philosophy. Pascal met him and analyzed his work. Concludes -

''I cannot forgive Descartes. In all his philosophy he would have been quite willing to dispense with God. But he had to make Him give a fillip to set the world in motion; beyond this, he has no further need of God.''

Decarte laid bricks in the road to 'materialism' - no spiritual reality exists. Nevertheless -

''The nature of man is wholly natural, omne animal.
There is nothing he may not make natural; there is nothing natural he may not lose.''
This use of paradoxical contrasts is a wonderful teaching tool!
    (from the Proverbs?)

    Pascal is a treasure.
Some think helped Newton find calculus.
Wilberforce studied him for hours and became a believer.
    Malcom Muggeridge loved him.
Tocqueville studied him his entire life, over and over.

Anyone who reads Pascal - and gets the sense of it - will never be poor again!
  • It's interesting how few spiritual people have read this book. It's truly moving and you'll find yourself repeating much of what Pascal wrote so long ago. It's a book from a man that thought long and hard about faith. While some of his sayings are popular and well known, many of the best I believe are still just waiting in the book to be found.
  • Atheists sometime do, but purely out of context. Christians frequently. This brilliant Mathematician who invented the calculator and barometer and who made significant contributions to geometry by age 13 was a devout Christian. The Penses are thoughts in isolation. I particularly liked his exposition of the Old Testament types. He understood very well the foreshadowing of the Messiah and properly referred to Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he revered and understood the Jews as God's chosen people. On other topics, his philosophical dislike of Montaigne and Rousseau. Of course the very brilliant Pascal's Wager which every atheist must consider

    Pascal's wager

Man Christians profess a religion for which they cannot give a reason and even declare that any attempt to do so would be foolishness.

Pascal. CERTAINLY, EVEN THOUGH LACKING IN PROOFS , THEY ARE NOT LACKING IN SENSE.

    Man What do you mean?
Since God is infinitely incomprehensible. Then understanding him by means of reason is a contradiction in terms.
Is it not because our reason is limited that we should have a limited idea of God?

God is, or he is not.
Reason can decide nothing here. Except to admit there is an infinity of things beyond understanding.
Are you not a skeptic? because skeptics know man has a deep need for certitude,
And a man like you wouldn't be satisfied with less,
Nor dogmatic, because we all know that life is uncertain and in constant flux.
    Where does that leave us?
God is or He is not.
To which side shall you incline?
Since this game could be played forever without outcome, you must wager.
It is not optional, you are embarked
But neither to the reason nor to the heart.
Is it satisfying to wager on what is finite?
    No.
    Why?
Because if you wager on what is finite and limited.
    And win, you gain nothing.
But if you lose, you lose it all.
If instead you wager on the infinite
    And win, you gain all;
But if you lose, you lose nothing.

Man But aren't we still uncertain?
Pascal Yes, of course, but you hope.
And instead of counting only on your own strength
    And risking despair,
You place your hope in the reality of a superior existence.
    Man And if I lose?

    Pascal
    And if you lose?
You have fought the good fight and will have become a charitable and sincere friend.
And, in the meantime, God might reveal himself to you.

Epistemic Cultures How the Sciences Make Knowledge Karin Knorr Cetina Books Reviews

  • The intricate interest in bits and pieces of concepts being put together for experiments that try to scratch the surface of what is going on when we don't understand basic interactions we don't really see can produce a specialty in theory making guesses and technical equipment built to catch what we never knew in the act of becoming thinkable. Funded ideas apply to more than who is going to pay for the continuity that is more squishy when everybody stops trying to find answers.
  • Knorr-Cetina's study of how scientific knowledge is produced has been around for more than a decade but still remains one of the best sources for what the concept of "Epistemic Cultures" means. It has developed into broader concepts that may be applied to organizations or larger systems, the number of citations it has gotten is just a small indication of its importance. Recommended to those interested in studying knowledge creation/use/transfer in contemporary settings.

Huellas de las literaturas hispanoamericanas 2nd Edition Spanish Edition John F Garganigo René de Costa Ben A Heller Alessandra Luiselli Georgina SabatRivers Elzbieta Sklodowska Books Reviews

  • A book such as this is an indispensable reference guide to vast mosaic that is Hispanic literature. This book, which will primarily be used in intermediate-advanced Spanish literature courses in college, especially in introductory courses in Hispanic literature, will give the reader an overview to the most important works by Hispanic writers starting with Nahuatl literature (the indigenous pre-Columbian peoples of the Americas), covering all of the major literary artistic periods to today.

Please note that the book is entirely in Spanish and is not meant for beginners. As a future high school Spanish teacher, I feel it to be appropriate reading for advanced high school students (AP and native speakers) and up, though one would be hard pressed to find it in use in any high school.

The book is an anthology, and therefore only selected parts of the literary works are presented.

It is a definite must for college Spanish majors, especially those readers whose roots are planted in the Americas, and, quite frankly, anyone wishing to read for themselves the history of the Americas from the vantage point of the participants,.

I can personally attest to the powerful stories contained therein. I was especially moved by the Nahuatl poetry which described the atrocities committed by the conquistadors. Though do not let that detract you or skew your view of the Spanish; all throughout history different peoples have waged wars against each other, killed "in the name of God," and the like. While this doesn't justify their actions, the conscientious readers must always keep things in context, try to understand the frame of mind and reference of the authors, and appreciate the treasures that they left for us to read, assimilate, and hopefully learn something from and change the world for the better.
  • I love this textbook. I enjoy reading the biography and background for the authors of each reading selection. It is all in Spanish But if you love Latin American literature, you will love this
  • Good introductions to each period, very helpful foot notes throughout the readings. Text examples weren't too long, but just enough to get a taste for the literature.
  • Book has great info about ancient mexican civilizations, It mentions life before the conquest and after as depicted by ancient poets that wrote what they were living at the time. Very interesting.
  • very fat book so you can use it once and the seem will "break in"
  • Book was in good condition.
  • It got to me on time but the book was in pretty bad condition. The first two pages fell out and the front cover is really beat up
  • Book came in amazing condition. Great for the class
