Coach Wooden and Me Our 50Year Friendship On and Off the Court eBook Kareem AbdulJabbar Reviews

  • You might think the book would be lightweight and predictable, but the story goes beyond expectations and really resonates in today's world of intolerance. The book also elevated me spiritually. Kareem's skill as a writer, and hard work to get at the truth of his relationship with Coach Wooden is evident. I first read about Coach Wooden in the 1980s and came to appreciate his work ethic, honesty, and leadership. And I also had a lot of respect for Kareem, first watching him play for the Lakers, and then his later success as a historian and writer. So, I knew the book would be worthwhile, but it went beyond those expectations two people from different races, different religions, and different parts of the country, several decades in age difference, and they come together with mutual respect for each other, a teacher and his student, and both learn from each other for a lifetime. I definitely feel inspired and enriched after reading this book.
  • Books about John Wooden should be required reading. You always come away learning something. What I enjoyed most about this one is how Kareem demonstrates how 2 thoughful, well intentioned people can have different views based on their life individual experiences, and be able to learn from each other's perspectives.
  • I've followed Kareem since he was Lew Alcindor in college. While one of my all time favorite athletes I'd always perceived a type of radical-ness that acted as a bolder, disrupting water in my river of perception. This book pulverizes that bolder. I believe it was misinterpretation on my part.

I've read nearly all of the books written on Coach. Kareem tells stories I've never heard before. This is a special tale about two people's lives that intersected for decades, each having a profound effect on the other.
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabber is an amazing writer. His respect and love for Coach Wooden is movingly communicated in this awesome book. Coach Wooden is shown to be a man who had flaws but never stopped trying to be a better person and trying to instill strong principles and values to others during his amazing life! Mr Abdul-Jabber tracks the growth of his personal experience with Coach Wooden from his being coach to his enduring life long friendship!!! Great insight from one of the greatest players of all time who is now one of the most thoughtful writers we have today!!!!
  • My eyes filled with tears at the end of this book. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did such a fine job of capturing the profound importance of his relationship with John Wooden that I shared his grief when Coach dies in the final pages. Abdul-Jabbar always struck me as a fiercely intelligent, complex and thoughtful guy. But his often stoic public demeanor prevented me from realizing how deeply sensitive, introspective and warm he is as well. This wonderful book put an end to that. It is brimful with emotion, often self-effacing but always remarkably candid and open. Both of these remarkable men factored heavily in my basketball fandom. That the most important dimensions of each of them are not actually directly related to their prodigious accomplishments on the court is remarkable. That the unique and life-long friendship they forged transcends all of it is, too.
  • I just finished reading the E-book version. I couldn't stop reading it. OUTSTANDING. Thank you Kareem so much for sharing your times about a wonderful man to us.
  • Like many sports fans, I admired the long, successful careers of John Wooden and Kareem Abdul Jabber. What I didn't know is what is revealed in this book the nature of their friendship, a friendship that can be a model for all of us to strive for.
  • Kareem Abdul Jabbar is one of our most intelligent athletes ever and has always followed a different drummer. Now a committed author with books and opinion pieces in papers like The NY Times. As a fan of John Wooden I had to read this book with low expectations. They were FAR exceeded.

Jabbar is a very good writer and has quite a story to tell. How could a thin, tall athlete with left leanings maintain such an intimate relationship with a much older, conservative MidWesterner? How could these two opposing personalities meld until Wooden was in his 90s? And how could this amazing athlete write such a touching, compassionate story of the love and respect shared between Jabbar and Wooden? It's all here in these pages. Abdul-Jabbar was a GREAT basketball player, clearly intelligent. Most don't get a great chance at a second career. But Jabbar is a great writer/activist that deserves our attention. He's led an interesting, reflective life.

Truly a special book that I could not recommend higher.

Bare Bones I'm Not Lonely If You're Reading This Book Audible Audio Edition Bobby Bones HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • Long time listener of the BBS preordered the book and started reading it as soon as it got here today ... If youve been a listener for a while then you have heard most of the stories but it was also cool to get a glimpse into Bobby's head about what he was going through/feeling at certain times of his life .. I do wish it would of been a little longer and went into more of the relationship between him and the rest of the members of the show .. All in all though I did enjoy the book and even though I didn't buy the audiobook for some reason I could hear Bobby's voice in my head as I read it 😂
  • Very raw look into the real Bobby Bones. Heartbreaking at times. It made me want to just give him a huge hug. I've always loved listening to The Bobby Bones Show each morning during my commute to work but I have a new level of respect for Bobby after reading his book. FIGHT. GRIND. REPEAT.
  • This is seriously one of the saddest, most entertaining books I have ever read. I love the very personal touch of this book and even if you don't know who Bobby Bones is, you absolutely love him (as I do) or you don't like him (I can't imagine if you have ever listened to him), you can't help but feel his struggles as well as his success throughout this book. If you have never had the addiction struggles in your family as he had in his, it gives you an inside look at how addiction affects every single person you are around; it is not just the addicts problem. I feel like this book gave me a better understanding of how a child of addiction feels and since I work with kids who have similar situations, this was a great eye opener for me, but there is so, so, so much more in this book than just that. Thank you Bobby Bones for being so open throughout this book; you have no idea how much you have touched and inspired peoples lives just being you.
  • When Bobby Bones replaced the morning show I had listened to while driving to work for the past couple of years, I was NOT happy. But I had to listen to SOMETHING on my drive to work, and I'm a creature of habit (or stubborn), so I refused to change the station.

It took me about a week to get over my upset and absolutely fall in love with the Bobby Bones show. Yeah, a whole week. Amy is sweet, Lunchbox is obnoxious, and Bobby is a true breath of fresh air.

When he said he was writing a book, I couldn't wait to read it. It took me about 3 sessions to read through it.

I don't know what the negative reviewers are complaining about. Okay, so Bobby writes like he talks, not like someone writing an essay for an English grammar class. So what! I like how he talks, and the fact that he wrote that way kept my interest. And to the reviewer who has lost respect for him.... I don't understand why... Here is an imperfect guy writing about his imperfect life. I completely get it. I respect him for it. He has trust issues. I get that, too.

The guy is real. He had a not-great childhood (overall). He was dirt poor. But he figured it out and he moved on. Okay, the "stuff" still lives in his head - hey, I have stuff from my past that won't go away, too, and if someone tells me they DON'T have "stuff" from their past, I will say that person is lying - to me AND to him/herself. But Bobby has and is making lemonade out of the lemons - for other people. He helps people -- because of where he came from. He calls that selfish. I call it remarkable.

(Oh, and he likes dogs. That makes him a-OK in my book.)

I hope Bobby finds his "happy ever after", but even if he never finds Ms. Right, I think he's doing just fine.

I loved the book. I'll read it again at some point. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
  • I've listened to the Bobby Bones show everyday for the past two years...the very first time I heard the show was right after I moved from my little hometown in SC to FL for my daughter to attend a special school for kids with autism. Our whole life had been uprooted so she could have a chance at a future and we were all pretty homesick with no friends or family nearby. As I found the radio station by chance and heard Bobby talking to a woman who called in and was crying because her dog was sick and she couldn't afford the surgery needed, he offered to pay the vet bill for her so she wouldn't lose her dog, I was hooked. We've listened ever since that day, every day and have been to a Raging Idiots concert, bought the Pimpin Joy shirts and felt like we've become part of the family as we've celebrated Lunchbox's wedding and mourned the sickness and then loss of Amy's mom and everything in between. I identify with a lot of Bobby's story about his childhood and issues that he deals with surrounding it and wish him and the entire crew nothing but the best as they continue, hopefully for a very long time, to come to us each day, making us laugh, cry and feel like part of the family.
  • At a point in my life when everything was going wrong, I stumbled upon Bobby Bones' morning show. I didn't even like country music but I was drawn to his positive attitude. Listening to his show quite possibly saved my life as it was a solitary ray of sunshine in the darkest storm of my life. He has endured a lot of terrible things and hearing him choose joy, to persevere, and to keep pushing to not only make his life better but the lives of those around him better, inspires me daily. His story isn't eloquently written nor sophisticated, and it isn't incredibly cerebral or complicated in its telling either. But it is very raw, real, motivating, and honest. He is vulnerable in telling his story and it's obvious that he is telling it to not only show the reader that they aren't alone out there, but he's telling it so he won't feel alone in his journey through life.
  • Good book, most if not all the stories I had heard before but Bobby goes into more detail than on air. Overall on the book grading scale ....overall I give Bare Bones 4 out of 5 stars. Minus one star because I still want to know what happen to Carlos ?

"Like A Wrinkle in Time (Miranda's favorite book), When You Reach Me far surpasses the usual whodunit or sci-fi adventure to become an incandescent exploration of 'life, death, and the beauty of it all.'" —The Washington Post

This Newbery Medal winner that has been called "smart and mesmerizing," (The New York Times) and "superb" (The Wall Street Journal) will appeal to readers of all types, especially those who are looking for a thought-provoking mystery with a mind-blowing twist.

Shortly after a fall-out with her best friend, sixth grader Miranda starts receiving mysterious notes, and she doesn’t know what to do. The notes tell her that she must write a letter—a true story, and that she can’t share her mission with anyone.

It would be easy to ignore the strange messages, except that whoever is leaving them has an uncanny ability to predict the future. If that is the case, then Miranda has a big problem—because the notes tell her that someone is going to die, and she might be too late to stop it.

Winner of the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Fiction
A New York Times Bestseller and Notable Book
Five Starred Reviews
A Junior Library Guild Selection

"Absorbing." —People

"Readers ... are likely to find themselves chewing over the details of this superb and intricate tale long afterward." —The Wall Street Journal

"Lovely and almost impossibly clever." —The Philadelphia Inquirer

"It's easy to imagine readers studying Miranda's story as many times as she's read L'Engle's, and spending hours pondering the provocative questions it raises." —Publishers Weekly, Starred review

"This isn't so much science fiction as a (rather short) glimpse into the way friendships work in 6th grade--well observed, low-key funny, heartfelt, and true to life, with the really nasty feuds left out (yay!). The kids' interactions and shifting alliances are authentic, and Miranda is an engaging narrator. The time-travel angle is only obliquely related to the story, setting up the reason for Miranda to write what we're reading and providing a wistful twist at the end. But since I'm Miranda's age, it was worth reading for the nostalgic trip back to a kinder 1979."

When You Reach Me Yearling Newbery Rebecca Stead 9780375850868 Books Reviews

  • My folks didn't know what kind of books to buy me when I was a kid because they hadn't been readers. So they started buying me Newberry winners and they were all great, which is why this book shouldn't be a surprise- but it is.

Heartfelt, complex, smart and fantastical- it's a mystery in many parts, including the bizarre language of middle-school age friendship and time travel. Highly recommended (for adults, not just kids).
  • What an engaging book. I love the idea of that this revolves around that old game show, in a blurry background kind of way, $20,000 Pyramid. I grew up watching that show, perhaps some reruns—I can't know for sure, because I was born the time in which this is set. So, the fall of 1978 and the winter heading into 1979, are not in my memory banks. I love that this takes place during the time in which I was born but could not remember. But, that orange and brown haze which seems to define that era, is alive and well within the confines of When You Reach Me.

Revolving around an old Dick Clark hosted game show seems a little gimmicky on the surface, but Stead manages it deftly by setting it as a soft backdrop and a framing device. With Pyramid chapter titles, i.e., Things You Count, Things You Push Away, Salty Things, etc, you have a clever and grounding way to deliver these episodic moments from Miranda's life and hold onto that tie to the game show and her mother's appearance on it, coming up that spring.

The notes, and the missing items, provide a fantastic puzzle for the reader to unravel. The personal problems Miranda has to deal with are simple by definition but complex and tricky in life. Figuring out who you are and trying to understand the people around you is something at which everyone, at every age, struggles. Miranda is on the cusp of something extraordinary with the notes and the eventual discovery, but she's also on that cusp of heading into her teenage years, that apex which everyone must traverse as you leave childhood.

Not only do I adore this book, I would’ve absolutely loved it when I was in the target age range. I loved it so much, just because it's an entertaining book to read, that, after returning my borrowed copy to the library, I immediately ordered the hardcover for my sons to read.
  • I am a 6th grader now and had to read this for summer reading. I loved this book! It is my all time favorite now. I was a little confused at first about who Miranda was writing to in the beginning. The jumping from present to recalling things that happened in the past may have confused me a little, but in the end when it all came together- I was psyched. It all made sense, more sense than I ever could have imagined. I think the confusion in the beginning is part of the book, the mystery, and just a different style of writing than I am used to reading. This is the best book that I have ever been assigned to read.
  • This is one book that I read to my students every year, and this is now the 8th time I am reading this absolutely wonderful novel! I fell in love with the writing style of Rebecca and how she crafted her characters so well. Placing this story in the late seventies/early eighties was so wonderfully clever as well, which I truly believe makes the character interaction and development so much deeper and meaningful. Not mention being a young person myself during that time and remembering things like the $20,000 Pyramid, shag carpeting and record albums just adds authenticity as well.
The tie in with A Wrinkle In Time, scientific theories and the huge mystery that keeps you hanging until the end makes this one novel that I tell my classes that I would want with me on a desert island, no joke. It is that great and I highly recommend that ANY person read this very beautiful and amazing piece of work. I love this book!
  • I was intrigued by the promise of time travel in this book, perhaps by the possibility of one older self sending one's younger self messages. Or a friend or stranger in the future sending messages to yourself, in the present.

This book left me underwhelmed. The explanations of the time travel were gibberish, honestly. It's like they said, "This happens... then this happens!" No, that doesn't explain anything. You need to explain HOW it happens, not what happens.

And why did Marcus hit Sal? This is held up as a key moment in the book, yet even by the end, it's never explained.

Yes, the middle-grade heroine is quite likeable, but a lot of the book delves into the boring survey of "oh this is a cute trait of this character, so unlike others" and "oh this is a cute occurrence that happens on this street, observe it carefully!". It's like a sketch of what one can "see" and note in others. But it doesn't make a story. I've noticed a lot of those books lately. They try to outbid each other as who can come up with the most remarkable traits in people, society, and environment and everyday life. But there's little story or conflict.
  • This isn't so much science fiction as a (rather short) glimpse into the way friendships work in 6th grade--well observed, low-key funny, heartfelt, and true to life, with the really nasty feuds left out (yay!). The kids' interactions and shifting alliances are authentic, and Miranda is an engaging narrator. The time-travel angle is only obliquely related to the story, setting up the reason for Miranda to write what we're reading and providing a wistful twist at the end. But since I'm Miranda's age, it was worth reading for the nostalgic trip back to a kinder 1979.

Old School Grit Times May Change But the Rules for Success Never Do Sports for the Soul Volume 2 Darrin Donnelly 9780692816424 Books Reviews

  • I am really enjoying this book. It is easy to read, I love the story, and I can pick the book up at any page and get some motivation to move forward to achieve my goals. It is a great book to help me stay motivated and in control of my sport destiny. It inspires me to live up to my own standards and that is what I appreciate most about it. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to gain motivation and create more momentum toward goal achievement.
  • It is a very good experience to read this book since it feels like you are sitting with an old coach sharing his wisdom about the old and days and the present. It is very "conversational" in my opinion, and some people might want a more direct approach to knowledge. If you enjoy the anecdotical approach, this book will please you. If you want a succinct account of grit, this might not be a good read for you.
  • Love the approach of this story! It's a refreshing way to read a self help book. It's to the point and leaves me wanting more.

We follow a Coach on his last run. He uses journal messages to teach us lessons and gives us motivation that can be used in our everyday lives. This book is the second in the Sports for the Soul series and each one has given me a fresh perspective to live my life to my full potential.

    Would definitely recommend!
  • It’s the perfect book to teach a Pre Teen how to create their own success and confidence. Easy to read. Darrin Donnelly has 4 of these “Sports for the soul” books. Read them all.
  • I've enjoyed reading this book with my 12 year old son. We've had great conversations around the timeless lessons presented in the story. I'd recommend this book to any parent trying to instill a can-do attitude in their children.
  • I actually liked the first book better but this is definitely close and nearly as good as that one. I love the way he writes. I love the stories. They aren’t just sports books but they are good sports books if that is what you want. Highly recommend both of his first two. They only took me a day each.
  • Fantastic read, my mind kept drifting to those coaches who filled the mentor role for me. I could picture then saying similar things
  • Old School Grit provides simple tried and true steps to climb the ladder toward excellence. This book is a must read for student-athletes, coaches and anyone wanting to learn what it takes to separate you from the pack.

The 5 Second Rule Transform your Life Work and Confidence with Everyday Courage Audible Audio Edition Mel Robbins Mel Robbins Productions Inc Books Reviews

  • I purchased "The 5 Second" book during a Lewis Howes YouTube video interview with Mel Robbins.

Viewing inspiring videos first thing in the morning had become part of my morning ritual. So had watching past my allotted time for it. The 5 - has been a game changer - especially when getting moving is important.

We lost our only child just before her 15th birthday to suicide. I found her, administered CPR and an ordeal with a coma ensued. The aftermath is a journey through grief leaving me with many issues. The simple became difficult and PTSD is what the doctors said I was experiencing.

The 5 Second rule has helped me stay on tasks, get going in the morning, find my mind when it feels gone, and focus on my business. Best of all - happiness and hope are a big part of my life AGAIN! The 5 has helped me feel alive when I needed it.
  • I am so torn. I love the #5SecondRule. Mel Robbins is a rock star. I love her TED Talk, and other interviews I've seen her on. The book is filled with solid, actionable information that I am putting into action in my own life with awesome success. Kudos Mel Robbins! For that I'd give it 5 stars, no doubt.

The constant stream of "social proof" via the social media posts broke the flow of the text, and constantly took me out of the experience. One at the end of each chapter to bring home how to integrate the information into the reader's life? Sure. But one almost every page, and sometimes twice? C'mon! The format was simply too long for the amount of actionable information given, and the social proof stuff felt like fillers to justify the length of the book. Another reviewer wrote that the actual information given could've easily fit into a blog post, and I think they're correct. For that I'd give it 3 stars.

For the love of humanity, somebody - preferably a PROFESSIONAL editor - please, please, PLEASE edit this freaking book! I have a rule that once I start a book, I finish it, but the editorial mistakes were so pervasive that it was almost unreadable. (And I'm not talking about the "UR" or other grammatical errors on the social media posts either!) It got so bad that it actually started to piss me off. So much so that I actually took note of the publisher, and will avoid books from them in the future because of the epic editorial fail. If Ms. Robbins paid for an editor, she got ripped off. I was so grateful to reach the last page because it meant I was through with the book, but I don't think any author wants people to close their book in relief to be done with it. For that, I'd give it -0 stars if that were possible, and demand that the publisher's slew of proofreaders/editors give her her money back. The publisher did her an enormous disservice. Shame on them!

I've actually given this book as a gift to several people I know who will get a lot of it, but it comes with the caveat that the editing is sub par, for sure.
  • This is not an actual book. This is more of a scrapbook, loaded with screenshots of Facebooks posts (and each one of them has a transcription!). The free TED talk on YouTube will do it just fine. Don't waste your money (and time).
  • Save your money. This book was little more than "Here's the rule now look at 100+ pages of social media screenshot testimonials." Her advice is sound but I expected more from the book and find her ancillary materials have more substance.
  • I'm not a fan of the rule itself...in the morning I can count backwards til noon and I'm still not going to get up. I'm also not a fan of testimonials spread throughout the book. I think the testimonials take away from your focused reading. I believe the enormity of them could cast doubt to the credibility of her words if the book has to be so liberally peppered with testimonials. I would encourage her not to continue that trend in future books.
Why the 5 stars then? Robbins gave interesting insights on how the mind and heart works, incorporating areas on hesitation, instincts, goal related impulses, focus, and I think most importantly on feelings. I came away from the book with good information to fend off some of my own personal demons and felt better for having read the book. I consider that a win. I purchased the version and I would recommend it...perhaps not for the 5 Second Rule itself, but for the much greater insights on why we do what we do and how we can be stronger against the drama we create in ourselves that prevents us from moving forward.
  • Let me preface by saying that I am a Mel fan! I have heard her Ted Talks and have heard several Podcasts that she has been on. I also read her column on Success magazine. But this book is very disappointing due to the sole reason that the 5-second rule can easily be explained in a well-written blog post. There is some merit to the 'rule' and it can help us all get off our behinds and get things done but one can learn about it from the Ted Talk. Save yourself the money and time it takes to get and read this. Also, the book is filled with fillers! If I wanted to read social media posts about how the rule has been beneficial to followers, I can go to the authors Facebook page, I don't need to see that in the book. It's filled with fillers because there is only so much you can say about counting backwards to 5. I highly advise everyone to see her Ted Talk as I think you will get a lot out of it. But this book was disappointing. The only positive point is that you can finish it in one afternoon.
  • Definitely one of the worst books I have read by far, author just seems to repeat herself page after page. It had really great reviews, so I had really high expectations. I suggest going to a bookstore and read a preview of it, a few chapters and see if it's worth your time and money.
